GamerDNA Blog: Plenty Of Market Opportunity In MMOs

  • mykalgaidin · 6 months ago
I'm mostly an outsider to the whole MMO experience, having only played WoW. I started out strong, going so long as a week without even updating my game activities on gDNA. Then, I sort of petered out. Newer games (and a few older ones I missed) started rearing their heads, and my WoW playtime dropped, big time. I guess I run hot & cold, each game being an exciting new romance that burns brightly then cools down quickly.

That being said, I found the info in this article quite illuminating. It seems that more people are into MMOs than I originally thought, seeing how WoW dominates the landscape in terms of visibility.

One thing I would have liked to see: the numbers of people who play monthly-fee games as opposed to free-to-play games such as MapleStory, and if there is much of a cross-section between the two types.

honestly i think that although WOW may dominate the market share, there are so many gamers that there is still plenty of market for innovative designers to create games that will be profitable.

When I played wow that was pretty much all I played and it resulted in me getting burned out of the game very quickly and I just suddenly canceled my subscription.

I know a lot of WoW players including myself often take breaks from playing the game. For sometimes months at a time, often exploring new games, including mmo's.

There is always plenty of market for new MMOs and other game types. There are so many gamers out there, each with different tastes in a game. It's just a matter of finding and creating features to draw the players in. Features that keep the players attention as well.

This is a well presented and thought out article. A lot of food for thought where game developers are concerned and it would pay for them to take heed of what you have presented them on the proverbial silver platter.
There are people who get paid very well for this kind of market research and advise, especially considering the accuracy (in my opinion) of it and also the amount of money they could make from it.
People may argue based on their own WoW-time Vs other games/real life but then you really haven't understood the article, read it again.

I only have one point to bring up concerning Sport based MMOs - the people who love their sport enough for such a dedication (comparitive to WoW) are usually the type of people who don't like to sit still for an extended period of time (yes, it's a big generalisation) but that being said, console games have catered for this type of market quite well so far.

Loving the articles, keep up the good work
