GamerDNA Blog: Off To the Races: 70 to 80 in World of Warcraft

That looks about right. I know in my guild, there was an 80 within the first 4 days the expansion released. Over the first week, there were about 6 additional 80s.

Lastly, two weeks since launch produced around 16 80s.

Mind you, these were either college students who managed to complete assignments really early or people who took time off for vacation. Or they happened to have some kind of an emergency like a death in the family.

In my case, I was the first 80 in the guild and I leveled strictly as Holy. But I had the advantage of participating in beta and I knew what to do during quests and where to go.

I'm a stay at home mom, and the release of Wrath conveniently coincided with a week long break from school for my kids, so once Friday rolled around, I effectively had a very light "work" week in which to play. Normally, I can't play anywhere near as much as I was able to that week.

I got my xpac on Thursday night, and my shaman (elemental) hit 80 six days later. I was the first 80 in my guild, beating the next person by four days. Most of my guild took about 3 weeks. We had 6 people hit 80 within the first two weeks, most of which were adults with full-time day jobs who played into the wee hours each night.

I read all the quest text, and love the lore. It wasn't my intention to level quickly. I hadn't participated in the beta, so all the content was new to me, and I became immersed in the story lines. But, I'm normally a very efficient leveler, systematically grouping quests with objectives in the same areas, which really helps I think.

I'd venture a guess that users of gamerDNA.com (I'm presuming that's where the data comes from?) are going to skew towards "more dedicated" than the general WoW gaming populace by virtue of their having taken the time to register for and use a third party gaming site. (Most of my guild won't even use our guild website's website, so we're thanking our lucky stars that there's an in-game calendar nowadays.)

It is interesting that 98% of the serious players in the data set are at 80 within two months, but that doesn't necessarily prove that most/all former level 70's are at level 80 (to say nothing of the "just an hour or two in the evenings" crowd). Two months does sound about right to me intuitively (most of our former 70's now have at least one 80), but that's not a statistical measure.

I would guess that NE Hunters are last in the pack because those characters were intentionally left to second. Hunters are great at soloing and if all you friends are leveling with you then you are likely to play more group friendly classes (tank, healers) or harder to solo classes (ex: mage) first.

I wonder though, what was the gear level of those 70s in your sample?
A fresh 70 compared to a full T6 will have very different level speeds at least at the start of WOTLK, where the T6 geared can plow through the starting zones.

I was one of the last 80s in my guild, and I just dinged 80 about two weeks ago. I took a week-long trip to Sweden right after Wrath came out, but I was more than a week off on the whole leveling thing -- I think I just took more time than the average player to enjoy the scenery before dinging 80.

It took me about a week to get lvl 80.
And the first 1 in the guild. ;)

I wasn't at 70 by the time expansion hit, and i really don't hardcore play it like my sister does. But at the time,I was leveling at least once a day, almost twie a day, when done right. And i don't call myself hardcore. I did however see some things in it, and I'm not passing up getting it, ASAP. I do have onething to say, and I really am trying NOT to do a death knight. Not until I max Vheludon to 80 and get some good epics.

I wish i could have been 70 at release... but even I'M NOT THAT GOOD.... or have that little of a life.

I wonder what the average leveling speed of Death Knights was after the wrath release. I know that personally I dropped my BC "main" when wrath hit so that I could level a DK as my new main. I went from 55 to 80 in about a week. Though I did take the week of release off of work, and went through about a case of Red Bull in the process.
